South African Snapshot: Sangoma

A Sangoma is a traditional practitioner of herbal medicine and divination in many of the black cultures of South Africa. Often a sangoma can be translated as a witchdoctor. Sangomas and worship of ancestors go hand in hand. Evidence of their practices are a part of everyday life here; from posters like these on lampposts to the sound of drums beating away on the mountain behind our apartment. But more importantly, beyond what is visible, is what is not visible: the beliefs that enslave a person to fear and fatalism. Growing up with a background of witchcraft and then becoming a Christian leaves for a lot of confusing theology. We believe at the core of changing a society is combatting the lies of witchcraft with the Word of truth.
